The Church of Scotland’s Towards Ministry Team is hosting the first of a series of events that will make space for those who, however tentatively, are considering a calling to ministry on Saturday 26th August 10.30-3pm at St John’s Church Hamilton. The event will help people to take the first steps of prayerful enquiry. Almost all of those who now serve in ministry will point to someone, or various people, who prompted them and encouraged them to consider whether there might be a calling upon their life. For many, the starting point is something like ‘I couldn’t possibly do that!’ and only the gentle prompting and support of a trusted friend or member of their congregation made it possible for them to follow their calling. Maybe it’s not you but might you know someone in whom you see particular gifts and suitability? And might it be that that person just needs is a little nudge, whether they’re still a teenager or in their mid or even later years? In the coming years will there be someone in ministry who is there as a result of your encouragement? Why not have one of those ‘have you ever thought about…?’ conversations. Chances are not very high that you’ve hard of Aurelio Pereira. On the other hand, almost everyone on the planet has heard of Cristiano Ronaldo! But the fact of the matter is that without Pereira we might never have heard of Ronaldo. Pereira was the chief scout and youth coach at the Portuguese football club Sporting Lisbon and he is generally credited with having discovered and nurtured the young Ronaldo – and not just Ronaldo but half of the players who went on to win the European Championships for Portugal in 2016. Pereira himself was no great player but he had a gift to see potential in others. Might the same process be important for the Church as it seeks to identify a new generation of those ready to serve in our various forms of ministry? To book a place or to ask any questions about following a calling into ministry contact us by emailing ministry@churchofscotland.org.uk
