The Church Choir

Our choir take part in all of the Sunday morning services throughout the year by leading the sung worship and singing an introit at the start of the service. We also sing an anthem during many of the morning services between September and April/May. The Choir are affiliated with The Royal School of Church Music, and we make use of their excellent resources on a regular basis.

We are fortunate to have approximately 20 committed singers but are always keen to welcome anyone new who wishes to join us, we could especially do with some more male singers! The choir rehearse on Thursday evenings from 7:30pm to 9:30pm between September and April in the church – anyone can come along to join us, there is no requirement to read music.

Repertoire

The weekly choir music is chosen by our Organist and Choir Leader to fit in with the readings of the Lectionary for that particular week or the theme of a special service such as Harvest. In the past year we have sang music dating back to the 16th & 17th centuries through to pieces composed within the last couple of years.

Here is a selection of anthems, all which have been sung within the last year to give an indication of the range of music we sing:

bullet

If ye love me (Thomas Tallis, 1505 – 1585)

bullet

Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring (J.S. Bach, 1685 – 1750)

bullet

Alleluia from Exultate Jubilate (W. A. Mozart, 1756 – 1791)

bullet

For the beauty of the earth (John Rutter, born 1945)

A Festival of Nine Lessons and Carols

Each year the choir sings at this unique service, which follows the traditional format made famous by Kings College Cambridge. Last year’s service took place on Sunday 18th December,  and included the following choral music:

bullet Fanfare for Christmas Day (Martin Shaw, 1875 – 1958)
bullet People Look East (French Traditional Carol)
bullet In the bleak midwinter (Harold Darke, 1888 – 1976)
bullet A Ragtime Carol (Christopher Tambling, born 1964)
bullet Ding Dong Merrily on High (Traditional)
bullet Silent Night (Arranged by Bob Chilcott, born 1955)
bullet Star Carol (John Rutter, born 1945)
bullet Sussex Carol (Arranged by David Willcocks, born 1919)
