Greenbank Church Kirk Session

KIRK SESSION – WHAT DO THEY TALK ABOUT? The Kirk Session met on 7th February with 56 members attending and they discussed a wide range of issues. Worship: Gillian Foy was thanked by the Moderator for agreeing to take up the post of Prayer Promoter. The choir had a very successful and well attended Nine Lessons in Carols service although there was great sadness at the death in January of long standing member, Florence Denholm. An appeal was made for new members to join the choir – if you would like more......

Dear Friends, Nature offers me a reminder each year that Easter is just around the corner. First there are the snowdrops and crocuses in the manse garden and then the cherry trees begin to blossom into wonderful new life in the church ground. The link between the new life of Easter and spring is one that is often made by people of faith, because it seems to point to how Jesus’ death on the cross (winter) was miraculously transformed into new life (spring). It’s a good illustration, but for it to mean......

A LEGACY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS

DETERMINING A SPECIFIC LEGACY Our property dates from the 1880’s and presents many challenges in terms of fitness for purpose, accessibility and running costs.  The largest and most costly space to heat and maintain (the sanctuary) lies empty for much of the time. With a reducing and increasingly elderly congregation, we are faced with the challenge of generating sufficient income to meet all costs. As we reflect on this, we are aware that we are the stewards of a legacy that was passed on to us and have a responsibility to make......

Lodging House Mission Logo

You are invited to support the LHM this Easter by making a cash donation. The LHM is sorry if it seems that it is always appealing for financial support, but the needs of the clients are great – the numbers attending daily are in excess of 100, and opening hours have been extended to include Saturdays. Saturday opening provides free food and fellowship unavailable elsewhere in our city on that day. You can donate via the website www.lhm-glasgow.org.uk , by post (Lodging House Mission, 35 East Campbell Street, Glasgow G1 5DT), by......

Dear Friends, Since the earliest times of the Christian Church there is evidence of some kind of Lenten preparation for Easter. The early church father, Irenaus of Lyons (c.130-c.200) wrote of this observance but back then it lasted only two or three days, not the 40 observed today. It wasn’t until almost 150 years later that a 40-day Lenten season of fasting was customary throughout the Church. How those 40 days were counted varied depending on location. In the East, fasting took place only on week days. The western church’s Lent was......
